Choosing AI Marking Software in the UK: A Buyer's Guide

Every vendor claims to "save marking time." UK leaders need a sharper checklist: rubric fidelity, GDPR-aligned data handling, teacher control, and evidence that survives moderation—not generic AI paragraphs.

1) Rubric and mark-scheme alignment

Ask vendors to demonstrate marking against your criteria—not a demo rubric they wrote. Generic AI chat tools cannot reliably apply GCSE, A-Level, BTEC, or vocational descriptors. Look for rubric builders, imports, criterion-level feedback, and batch cohort marking.

2) Teacher-in-control workflow

Avoid tools that publish grades directly to students without review. The best AI marking platforms treat output as drafts: editable comments, adjustable bands, and clear audit trails before release.

3) UK data governance

  • ICO registration and clear privacy policy
  • No sale of student data; no training of public models on your submissions
  • Encryption in transit; defined retention
  • DPA-friendly documentation for your data protection officer

4) Moderation and trust-wide consistency

MATs and federations need shared rubric libraries, cross-school sampling exports, and role-based access. ITPs need EPA-style evidence packs. Ask for sample exports before you buy.

5) Pricing model that matches your context

Individual teachers may prefer pay-as-you-go credits. Whole-school rollouts often need enterprise pricing with central billing, SSO, and compliance add-ons. Clarify whether pricing is per seat, per script, or unlimited pilot.

6) Pilot before you scale

  1. One department, one assignment type, one rubric.
  2. Compare AI drafts to a human-marked sample set.
  3. Review with moderation leads and your DPO.
  4. Measure turnaround time and feedback quality—not just hours saved.

Questions to ask vendors

  • Can we mark a full cohort against our rubric in one session?
  • Where is data processed and how long is it retained?
  • Do you support moderation exports and audit logs?
  • What happens if the AI misreads a creative response?
  • Can teachers edit every comment before students see feedback?
