Buyers guide

AI detectors for UK schools compared

A criteria-based table of Feedback Flows versus Turnitin, GPTZero, Copyleaks, Originality.ai and Is It AI?, sourced from each vendor’s public pages and JCQ guidance as of October 2026. Honest where we do not lead.

UK schools comparing AI detectors should weigh inspectable evidence, learner baselines, cohort similarity, data retention and UK governance, not just a headline accuracy percentage. Cells marked “Not documented” mean we could not verify the claim on public materials at the time of writing.

How to read this

Where others are stronger

Choose Feedback Flows when you want passage-level evidence, learner writing fingerprints, organisation-only collusion checks, and UK school/ITP data commitments beside marking and feedback, not a detector in isolation.

Choose Turnitin when you need deep LMS integrations and a large web/publication similarity database. That remains a genuine institutional strength we do not match today.

Choose GPTZero or Copyleaks when you specifically want a tool already named as an example in JCQ’s guidance list, or a lightweight detector workflow. Naming is not endorsement; still verify accuracy limits and contracts.

Consumer checkers such as Is It AI? can be useful for quick personal checks, but they are not a substitute for a school processor agreement, audit trail or learner baseline. A table that claims to win every row is usually marketing, not procurement evidence.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

It depends what you need as evidence. Score-only tools can flag risk quickly. Feedback Flows is built for quoted passages, learner writing-fingerprint baselines and organisation-only similarity, with UK DPA/ICO posture documented for schools and ITPs. No detector alone proves misconduct.

No. JCQ’s AI-use guidance names example detection services (including Copyleaks, GPTZero, Sapling and Turnitin AI writing detection) as non-exhaustive examples, not an endorsement. Centres must check supplier terms, accuracy limits and data protection before relying on any tool.

Detector scores vary with genre, length, EAL writing and student editing. Without quoted passages and context, a percentage invites accusation rather than enquiry. Prefer tools that show the text they are talking about and combine them with authorship history and teacher judgement.

No. Our similarity scoring compares work inside your organisation (cohort and bank), not a global publication database. If you need large web/publication matching, Turnitin and similar institutional products remain stronger on that criterion.

Ask what evidence is shown (quotes vs % only), whether you can compare to a learner’s own baseline, whether cohort collusion checks exist, retention and training-use terms, UK DPA/ICO posture, JCQ guidance context, pricing and LMS fit. Re-check vendor pages before procurement.

Yes. Vendor products change. If a cell is wrong or out of date, contact us with a public source link and we will review and update. We would rather be accurate than flattering.
